Join us for a Matinee of Mando Madness!
As recipients of the 2025 North Carolina Folklife Apprenticeship Award, Darren Nicholson and Daniel Ullom are excited to present a concert exploring bluegrass mandolin and Western North Carolina music traditions. Darren Nicholson, who has played mountain music since his youth in Western North Carolina, is a high-caliber mandolinist with substantial contributions to such acts as Alecia Nugent and Balsam Range. His punchy mandolin playing has taken him from Maggie Valley to the Grand Ole Opry and beyond. Daniel Ullom is a professional performer and educator dedicated to the preservation of regional bluegrass. His mentorship under Darren has focused on the distinctive Western North Carolina mandolin styles that merge old-time and bluegrass traditions, as well as the professionalism, stagecraft, and community values central to this music.
