about

from 1977 to present

Local resident and visionary entrepreneur, Dave Mallett, opened the Weinhaus in 1977. His goal as the first wine and beer store in downtown Asheville was to provide a high quality and wide-range of inventory sourcing locally and internationally.

Since 2004, his son, Hunt Mallett, took ownership and then invested in building out a wine bar/taproom connected to the original store, Cork & Keg, in 2013.

Hunt’s son, John Mallett, has been working the bar and shop for over 20 years, and continues the tradition keeping the business in the family.

The Cork & Keg / Weinhaus combination offers a unique value to the downtown Asheville community by providing a one-stop shop, bar, and live music venue. The Cork & Keg provides a weekly pairing of traditional Roots/Americana music with what’s currently on tap!

hunt mallett

Hunt took over the Weinhaus in 2004 after his father (and Founder), Dave Mallett, retired. A native of Western North Carolina, and long-time resident of Asheville, Hunt has a passion for this area. He loves fine wine & beer, traditional music & dance, and not necessarily in that order! An original “Road Team” member of The Green Grass Cloggers, he brings his love of traditional arts to the Cork & Keg, sourcing the talented musicians who play weekly. Having a deep knowledge of the industry, he’s passed on much of this to his son, John. You’ll find Hunt hanging out at the Weinhaus ready to answer your questions!
